Junior Mendelssohn Concert: Pergolesi’s Magnificat

The Junior Mendelssohn Choir presents its annual concert on Sunday, November 8 at 4:00pm at Third Presbyterian Church.  The Junior Mendelssohn will perform Giovanni Pergolesi's Magnificat, conducted by Music Director Stephen Neely.  Better known for his Stabat Mater, Pergolesi probably composed the Magnificat during his time at the conservatoire in Naples, where he was enrolled from 1720-1731.  The Magnificat blends the traditional polyphant of the...

Coronation Mass, Unfinished Symphony and Emperor Concerto

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by PSO Music Director Manfred Honeck present Mozart's Mass in C major, or "Coronation Mass."  Mozart was commissioned to write this Mass while he was in the Archbishop's service in Salzburg.  He composed the Mass for Easter Sunday, 1779.  The concert also features Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto, performed by pianist Yuliana Avdeeva, and Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony....

Duruflé Requiem

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh's 2015-2016 season opens with a performance of Maurice Duruflé's soulful Requiem, conducted by Music Director Betsy BurleighDuruflé completed the Requiem in 1947, and dedicated the piece to the memory of his father.  He incorporated themes from Gregorian chant into the Requiem, with an emphasis on the Gregorian "Mass for the Dead."  The performance also includes Duruflé's Quatres Motets, as well...
