Singer Registration

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, along with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, on behalf of the Page family, presents a weekend of events that will celebrate the life and legacy of MCP Director Emeritus, Robert Page.  We have contacted friends and alumni of choirs that had the privilege of working with Dr. Page, including, but not limited to: Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, Chorus America, and the Berkshire Choral Festival.  If you know someone who should be aware of this event, please feel free to pass on the information.  We want as many people as possible to come celebrate Bob’s extraordinary life.

  1. Choir Rehearsal (singers only) –  Saturday, May 6, 3:30-5:00 pm – Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Rd., Upper St. Clair, PA 15241
  2. Dress Rehearsal with PSO (singers only) – Sunday, May 7, 2:30-5:00pm at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222
  3. Tribute Concert (all invited, ticket required) – Sunday May 7, 7:30p.m.  at Heinz Hall

Attending the Concert as a Non-Singer
If you are planning to attend the tribute concert as an audience member on Sunday, May 7, you can reserve your FREE ticket by going to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s website.   You will have the ability to choose your seat. There is a ticket service charge if you book your ticket online of $3 per order.  You can avoid this cost by ordering over the phone at 412-392-4900.

Singing in the Choir for the Concert
The Page family hopes many of you will choose to participate in the weekend as a singer.  In order to do this, you MUST register yourself as a singer!  Registering as a singer will also guarantee you a ticket to the concert in the choir seating section of the house; thus, if you are planning to sing, you should not go through the PSO to reserve a ticket.  If you are bringing a non-singing companion (i.e., spouse, friend) they will NOT be able to sit with you during the concert for logistical reasons.  In these cases, please register yourself as a singer at the Mendelssohn website and have your companion reserve tickets through the Pittsburgh Symphony. (see above for link to PSO).  Deadline to sign up to sing is March 31.  There is limited space on stage, and spots for singers may have to be cut-off for logistical reasons.  Reserve your spot early!

A confirmation email will be sent to all singers by April 15; it will include downloadable files of the music you will need.  You should print this music, put it in a black folder (no loose leaf pages), practice it at home, and bring with you to the rehearsals along with a pencil!  These pieces include: Finale from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and Bob’s arrangement of The Way We Were.

A rehearsal for the massed choir will be held on Saturday, May 6 from 3:30-5:00pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.  Attendance at this rehearsal is not required to participate but is highly recommended.  The orchestra dress rehearsal for the concert is at Heinz Hall on Sunday, May 7 from 2:30-5:00pm.  Attendance at this rehearsal is mandatory.

Participating as a singer will require you to be able to ascend stairs to walk on stage and also necessitates standing during the performance for approximately 30 minutes on Heinz Hall stage.  The stage will be very crowded and rehearsal time is extremely limited; therefore special arrangements for accessible seating for singers may not be possible.  Please make an honest assessment of your ability to do this before signing up to sing.

Concert Dress for Singers
The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh will be wearing its concert attire for this performance, which consists of tuxedo for men, and floor length, long-sleeved black dresses for women. Guest singers: The only restriction on clothes is ladies must wear full length skirts or pants. Men should wear a jacket or suit with or without a tie. We want color!! Not black. It is an evening of celebration!

Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend/Low Supply of Hotel Rooms
Unfortunately, the weekend of the tribute is also the weekend of the Pittsburgh Marathon.  Hotel rooms will be at a premium, as will access to Downtown roads.  This is one of the reasons we have chosen to hold a rehearsal in the South Hills.  We have reserved a block of rooms at the Crowne Plaza Suites – Pittsburgh South, which is across the street from South Hills Village and under two miles from Westminster Presbyterian Church.  This hotel offers free parking, and also has easy access to “The T” (Pittsburgh’s Light Rail), which will give you easy access to downtown and Heinz Hall on Sunday.  To make a reservation at the hotel, call 412-833-5300 and ask for the Mendelssohn Choir group rate.

We have also reserved a block of rooms at the Sheraton Station Square – 300 W. Station Square Drive.  To make a reservation at the hotel, visit their website or call 800-325-3535 and ask for the Mendelssohn Choir group rate.

Questions and Contact Info
We are so excited to welcome back old friends and to make new ones as we remember Bob Page.  We have made every effort to include all the information you need in this email.  Please re-read the email before you contact us with any questions.  Our staffing is very limited and putting this weekend together will be stretching our organizational capacity to limits.  We will have additional information at our website as it becomes available.  If you do have any questions, please email us at mcseip@themendelssohn.org.
