For the Human: Brahms’ Requiem

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh opens the 2023-2024 season with a performance of Brahms’ soulful, yet hopeful Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.  It is Brahms’ longest composition, and while it uses sacred text, it is not a requiem in the traditional Latin sense, rather focusing on hope and comfort.  The concert begins with an a cappella performance of Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds’ “Lux Aeterna.”
