The Mendelssohn Choir Announces the 2017-2018 Performance Season!

The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce their 2017-2018 performance season, which will feature classical favorites, new music and a world premiere!

The season opens in September with the world premiere of composer and FUSE@PSO Creative Director Steve Hackman‘s Dylan and the Nobels, an oratorio of poetry and lyrics by Nobel Prize in Literature winner Bob Dylan, plus text from other Nobel laureates, including Octavio Paz, Toni Morrison, and Pablo Neruda.

The MCP returns to the Heinz Hall stage in December with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck to perform a semi-staged version of  Haydn’s Creation, which was postponed from last season.  That same weekend, the MCP and PSO will present a one-night only performance of Messiah, Handel’s beloved masterwork.  December also finds the MCP in the world of video games, as Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess returns to Heinz Hall.  The MCP then rings in the season with two weekends of the Highmark Holiday Pops.

The MCP’s second self-produced concert will be in February 2018 with the Pittsburgh premiere of Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light.  It was inspired by the 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, and the libretto is taken from a variety of ancient writings, most of it from medieval female Mystics.

In April 2018, the MCP and PSO will perform Verdi’s operatic Requiem, and then they close out the season in June with Berlioz’s Te Deum.
