The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce its upcoming 2018-2019 season, including two exciting productions that are sure to delight and entrance audiences.

MCP will present Let My People Go! A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad in collaboration with Ebenezer Baptist Church on February 15, 2019, marking the first time the Choir has performed in Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District.  The concert will include performances of African American spirituals, and will guide audiences along the Underground Railroad through storytelling, interpret the secret codes used by those along the Railroad, and explain the significance of the spirituals.  The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh will open the show with works by contemporary African American composers, and joins MCP for the final work of the performance.  The show’s cast will include soprano Elisabeth Stevens, as well as bass Gregg Baker, known for his commanding voice and a favorite of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

The Mendelssohn’s second performance of the season is Victoria’s Secret: A Life in Music, celebrating Queen Victoria during the 200th anniversary of her birth.  Matthew Mehaffey, the Robert Page Music Director, has created the show to highlight the music and composers that were significant to Victoria and the historical period.  Featured music will include Richard Wagner’s “Here Comes the Bride,” which was Victoria’s coronation music, as well as work by Johann Strauss, Cesar Frank and Arthur Sullivan, all of whom composed pieces for Victoria. The concert will also include music by MCP namesake Felix Mendelssohn, a close friend of Victoria’s, who would frequently write music specifically for her and her husband Albert to play together on the piano.Victoria’s Secret: A Life in Music will be performed on May 18, 2019 (7:30pm), at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, and on May 19, 2019 (3pm) at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.
