Junior Mendelssohn Jubilee: 25 Noteworthy Years

Saturday, November 26, 2011 - 4pm
Omni William Penn Hotel
Grand Ballroom

The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh presents its annual concert on Saturday, November 26 at 4:00PM at the Omni William Penn Hotel. The concert will be part of the Junior Mendelssohn 25th Anniversary celebration.  Featuring Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria in D, RV589, with orchestra and student soloists, the program will also highlight music from Junior Mendelssohn performances over the last 25 years.  Music Director Susan Medley will be joined in conducting by former music directors, Robert Page, Christine Jordanoff, and Christine Hestwood.  The concert will close with 25 years of Junior Mendelssohn alumni joining the current singers on stage in a rousing rendition of Aaron Copland's "Stomp Your Foot," conducted by Dr. Robert Page.

Letter from Music Director Susan Medley
Welcome to the Jubilee Season Concert of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh! The past weeks have been extremely rewarding for the Junior Mendelssohn staff and for me personally.

It is a joy to work with these talented young men and women. They bring such passion, such commitment, and such energy to every rehearsal. They exhibit professionalism beyond their years, and each week they challenge themselves to make music at a higher level than the week before.

This year is especially exciting, as we celebrate 25 years of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. Our concert features works performed by Junior Mendelssohn Choirs over the past quarter of a century. Junior alumni will no doubt recognize pieces that they sang under the direction of Robert Page, Christine Jordanoff, and Christine Hestwood. It is thrilling for us to have each of these three previous conductors of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir leading us in a work on the program.

It is said that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. As we consider the alumni of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir, we see individuals with vibrant careers as opera singers, choral conductors, music teachers, church musicians, film and television actors, and countless other professions that may or may not be music-centered, but music still plays an important role in their lives. As I have had the opportunity to talk with alumni, they have told me how crucial the Junior Mendelssohn Choir was to their development as musicians. For many, it was a turning point in their lives, and all feel privileged to be a part of this 25 year legacy.

I feel tremendously blessed to be a part of this organization that has done so much for so many young musicians. These singers are extraordinary, and it is my great pleasure to work with them every week.

Happy Anniversary, Junior Mendelssohn Choir. Here’s to another 25 years!

Enjoy the concert!
